Playing veterans cricket has given me a new sense of purpose in life.  Apart from the physical health benefits of being more active and exercising outdoors, the excitement of looking forward to playing and practicing benefitted my mental well-being as well. Being able to contribute to the team success by applying batting, bowling and fielding skills whilst also sharing knowledge, expertise and experience with fellow players is very fulfilling, resulting a new sense of belonging. Rekindling old friendships and meeting new people also brings about new social connections with people of a similar age group and diverse backgrounds.  Veterans cricket has certainly challenged me physically and mentally whilst also broadening my horizons.

Growing old gracefully is a challenge while also reducing the burden on one’s Family. After retiring from 36 years of Sport I sat at home for 13 years before Veterans Cricket was introduced in Pretoria. At that stage I was using insulin 4 times a day and just had a stent inserted into my heart. After now playing Veterans Cricket for 18 months, I can really feel the difference in health and it is truly a blast. The way Veterans motivate each other to do better is extraordinary. The over 60 Players set the standard for the rest.

When I started playing veterans cricket, I was pleased by the sense of camaraderie that existed amongst opposing team players, which speaks volumes for the spirit in which the matches are being played, while still being very competitive.  The atmosphere is so friendly and sociable that can be a pleasant outing for the whole family on a Sunday afternoon.

When we started Veterans Cricket in Titans, I wanted to create a cricket experience for cricketers over the age of 40 years. As I started playing the game again that I love so much, I not only enjoyed the cricket experience, but connected and formed a feeling of belonging between cricket friends from all backgrounds!
